It seems Efrem was born with a pensive and worried look on his face.

Oh, Zap’s mommy. Sorry, but I’m crying.

  • lightsabermario

Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked.

  • Mike

    Just like Disney, you can’t resist killing off the parents, break your audience’s little hearts );

  • Psiberkiwi

“And I alone survived to tell thee…”

Why (out of all the people of that world) were those three boys spared? What did the GEF see in those three that they couldn’t see in anyone else? Methinks you ‘gotta whole lotta ‘splainin’ to do’, Pascalle…

  • Jorge L. Carreras Jr.

Yes, at least with the elementals, the four who were captured WERE actively attacking the GPF. These three boys were just standing there, helplessly doing nothing while the GPF killed Zap’s mother and then showed up to take them.

  • Multiple responses to this page that popped into my head:

Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked…

Geez, mom, you’re crying! What a hypocrite!

That is one beautiful looking apocalypse!

The GEF learned its ship formations by watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

  • I don’t know, it’s luck really. It could have been any group of kids, it just happened to be them.

  • Efrem was never one of the cool kids! :(

If I have any of the cards left over after ECCC I guess I could just put them into volume 3 packets as they ship out (please please get here already books).

  • I was really hoping for a Kurt Vonnegut quote, but ATLA is good too.

  • Was it ever mentioned before in the comic that gunner, zap and efrem weren’t humans?

  • Like, a lot.

  • Marduk

Truly an alien nation. I cannot understand such level of pacifism. I mean they refuse to kill so it’s better to die and let even your children get massacred? Tough

  • mirrim

    Random thoughts by kid Efrem:
“Sure hope I’m not laying on an ant-hill.”
“Will mom be mad if I get grass stains on my clothes again?”

In all seriousness — that panel with Zap’s mom protecting them…and they way Gunner’s holding Zap back…*sad-face thousand times over*

  • Speedy Marsh

Too late, they realized that exiling the Ewok and Gungan species from their planet was a fatal mistake. For, while a planet full of psychics were no match for the empire, the Ewoks and Gungans could have easily dispatched them with the awesome powers of Cuteness and Silliness.

  • N0083rP00F

Ewoks are not cute. Also they are some of the most dangerous creatures out there with a taste for flesh of any sort not family. Remember they captured our heroes and were preparing a feast with them as the main course.

  • Speedy Marsh

My kids always reacted like Skippy from Animaniacs when he saw what happened to Bumbie’s Mom.

Disney animators must have rotten childern. Their movies are all like, “If you misbehave, your mother will get killed, and it will be all your fault.”

  • Speedy Marsh

Maybe in the books. In the movie, they were so cute that I almost felt bad when the main characters didn’t get eaten. It’s like stealing food from a puppy. I half expected to see the Swedish Chef chopping up vegetables to add to the stew, and the rest of the Muppets singing with the Ewoks by the fire.
Now, if they had Animal helping them fight the storm troopers…

  • Speedy Marsh

Efrem’s mom told him that if he wore that worried look all the time, his face would stick like that … which caused him to worry all the more.

  • Psiberkiwi

True enough, I suppose… Then again, if they hadn’t been saved, you couldn’t call the strip, “Zap!”… :P

  • “Some Other Guy!”

  • Everyone has been telling me how sad this page makes them. I’m sorry everyone!! :(

  • sunphoenix

    Uhm… you know Zap’s mom is kinda hot. Long-legged, tall… Blonde! :)

Is it just me or does her face kinda favor you Pascalle? :)

  • Sure, why not. I’m kinda hot. lol?

We saw her before, a looooooong time ago:
    http://www.zapcomic.com/2005/04/20090504/

  • I mean, it’s not like you didn’t know she was dead already. :(

  • safyrejet

Well it’s only making us sad because we care so much about your characters. If you hadn’t made us love Zap so much (and even Gunner and Efrem) we wouldn’t feel so sad about their painful past. So really don’t apologize. You guys have crafted good characters and an amazing story, that’s something to be proud about!

  • Honestly this is why I’m glad we made Zap. I love hearing that you guys love our characters the way we do too.

  • There’s something to be said about the psychology of someone willing to commit complete genocide of an intelligent species. If you spares a few kids you can always say “look we didn’t kill EVERYBODY”. Its a messed up scenario with little to grasp on for justification but people do it. humans suck even in the future it seems. Also, spare and capture a few kids with super powers maybe you can indoctrinate them to your side and you can work on that cool psychic army you’ve always wanted.

  • oh my god…like this just leaving me laughing and laughing…you’re awesome!

  • Sario528

Archive binge complete! Holy crap this is good stuff.

  • woo! You made it just in time!

  • Staring at walls = Fun

    BABY GUNNAH

  • Rexan

First thing I did after reading the first two panels was search the comments for “fire nation” to make sure someone else had said it.
