Brace for (emotional) impact.

Also, people noticing some of the recurring visual themes used throughout the series WINK WINK I’m sure you caught this one!

I can’t help but feel that the correct reaction is “No, I don’t want to watch your entire people be genocided, Zap.”

  • Zap just explained that when they die they turn into sparkles so the genocide is actually really quite lovely.

  • Psithief

I forgot that love makes people stupid.

  • Shadowmerc

look, the tide is going out.
*stares out across the ocean of emotion*
no, wait….it’s receding. the ocean of emotion is receding.
*watches the animals run into the forest of fonts*
I believe we are about to be hit with a title wave of feels.

*puts on water wings, tucks hanky in pocket and hugs rubber ducky*

  • GAWD, I know. Caring about other people is so lame.

  • Darkoneko Hellsing

    Dat 3rd panel <3

  • Marduk

Wonder how angry Gunner is then to forget the connection.

  • Stormfeather

What, no comments yet about OMG WIDDLE GUNNER! ?

  • beebee Efrem?!

  • they’re all so precious.

  • safyrejet

I know right. My first thought was, “Awwww lookit the cute little guy who’s not yet a brooding homicidal maniac. I could just pinch those cheeks.”

  • safyrejet

Wait, we’ve got a love story, sparkles, magical boys….GAH! You’re turning this into Twilight!!!! NOOOOOOOO

*ahem* panic aside, with the idea that psychics are feeling the pain they inflict on the universe, I feel really badly for Gunner. He must be really hurting and then some. A lot of it self-inflicted. :/

  • safyrejet

Well, it’s gonna be unpleasant to see, but I think Reona is really invested in understanding and knowing Zap in order to build a lifelong relationship with him. And that would require some lengthy backstory. Plus she just basically has like a million questions after all that’s happened. It’s quite convenient that her BF is a psychic who can project his side of the story into her head.

  • safyrejet

    Those eyes.

  • It would be space twilight if Reona was totally blank and boring and for some reason that made both Zap and Gunner super want to get with her.

Gunner is a huge mess. I hope everyone enjoys watching him unravel.

Did you bring your towel? Do not tell me you forgot your towel.

  • safyrejet

I’m sure we will, given that in general we enjoy watching Gunner, whatever he is doing.

  • mirrim

“When we were all children…and your ex-boyfriend was the awkward, worried-beyond-his-years introverted kid who could never keep up.” ; )

Ah yes. The third wheel. *sigh* I feel ya baby Efrem, I feel ya.

Looking forward to meeting these guys all over again. :D

  • svartalf

    “Listen, it’s a tough
universe There’s all sorts of people trying to do you, kill you, rip you
off, everything. If you’re going to survive out there, you’ve really got
to know where your towel is.”

    You *CAN’T* forget your Towel.

  • svartalf

It’s part and parcel of this story…of COURSE we’re going to watch and enjoy it- we’ve watched Zap and Reona get torn down and lifted up…and enjoyed every minute of it.

  • svartalf

Pretty damn angry. Zap was there too, hearing him tell it.

  • Crestlinger

After this is over there’s going to be a sploosh.

    … and this …

    http://www.zapcomic.com/2011/11/557-a-planned-delay/

are soon going to make much more sense.

hm that first one – just noticed for the first time Zap and Gunner are wearing (blood-soaked) GEF military uniforms.

And little Gunner’s hair ain’t purple.

  • Haha, I was wondering when people were going to pick up the GEF uniform thing!

Gunner’s hair is purple, but just sometimes changes in shade due to lighting.

  • Shadowmerc

    ITS OKAY!…its okay…..
i have my beach blanket wrapped around my head to keep out the sparkles.

  • Brian Baker

Yup! Although every time I see it, I want say “Noggins!” But that’s just because I watched Finding Nemo WAY too many times.

  • safyrejet

I think people have picked up on things like that, but many didn’t realize it was something worth mentioning at the time of original reading.

At least speaking for myself, I find many times a relevant foreshadowing page is linked to on a new page, I am not just noticing some detail for the first time, it’s more I’m finally realizing why certain details matter. I think that’s my favorite part of movies, when all the details come together and make sense. I find then a second watching later is more fulfilling. I know a second rereading of the whole completed Zap story will be just as rewarding, when the time comes.

  • stealth

Well, I guess it’s time to start the giant flashback, huh? While I am glad to finally see this, I am also rather concered about the genocide. And while it is plainly obvious they kinda became more after they died, it’s still quite sad they are all gone (that we know of).
On the flip side, however, are we gonna get snatches of whats going on back at camp? Because while Reona may have stopped Justin from punching William ONCE it doesn’t help when she is gone. And when you have a high ranking GEF officer surrounded by a bunch of REBELS, well it’s clear that things are gonna get a trifle intense. Especially if Holly, having shown a deep interest in our little soldier boy, decides to side with him. OR, at the very least, keep Justin from punching him again. All in all, I see a very volatile situation in the background that neither Zap or Reona are even paying attention to.

  • They have split off into groups. Justin isn’t really the guy to stalk someone in order to hurt them. Him punching William before was sort of a crime of passion.

  • P.S. CLASSIC WHERE’S WILLIAM WITH THIS!! HAHA

  • Speedy Marsh

I’ve seen the genocide then “sparkles” theme before, but I can’t remember where. The Ancients on Stargate were kinda like that, but I’m thinking there was something even closer. Can anyone else remember something like this?

Gunnerkrigg Court is also starting a sad flashback story line. I need to find some other webcomics that are on par with Zap! and G.C. to offset the upcoming sadness. It’s really hard to find webcomics like this one that draw you in so much that you have to remind yourself that the characters aren’t real. Wait, y’all aren’t getting these stories from real people in an alternate universe, are you?

  • safyrejet

We’ve been away from him for so long…

  • I spoiled you guys by giving you too much William at once with that whole last bit.

  • CoryC
  • JFoodgeek

Maybe his people died out because they had no women. Feminine looking men don’t count. :)

  • chrisbrady

I believe the movie Dark Crystal used the ‘death turns you into sparklies’ for the ‘good’ guys.

  • Guest

“I’ve always wanted to kiss you among the stars”
“Well actually they are the ashes of my dead people”
    “…good enough”

  • It is gratifying to see that your reaction to Twilight, and especially HER, mirrors my own.

    ;-)
