681 | Having a Look Around

681 | Having a Look Around

February 26, 2014 | 11:45 pm, by Pascalle Lepas

I hope you’re all ready for an explanation.

See you Monday!

EDIT: OH YEAH! I totally forgot that when I was working on this page  my pal Deanna wanted to try inking and coloring my roughs. Her version is pretty amazing. Thought about having her finish out the rest of the comic.

Preemptive strikes are the best idea.

  • Drunken Nordmann

    Especially when they fail, hrm?

  • Ali

So, I think we will find out that Gunner and Zap were friends from childhood years, and now they seek revenge of their lost ones.

  • trashbandit

Thank you for all the generous extra updates recently!

  • safyrejet

Yay Thursday update! As much as I liked how good Zap looked in that polished and precise uniform, it’s nice to see him loosened up and smiling and stuff. Even though he still has screws (or screw holes) in his face. It must be good to be home…and to finally have the girl of his dreams there to share his story with.

<__> That face wall is kinda creepy. 0_o

  • safyrejet

It’s one of those “seal your own destiny (usu of destruction) by trying to preemptively avoid it” things.

  • Mike

Kind of an odd mind, decides to build a set of humongous statues and then carve extra faces into their legs. Because most legs have faces growing out of them or something. :D

  • Kindra Coates

It’s interesting to see happy Zap in clothes that fit. ;)

“It was a long time ago.” — Are we about to find out there’s an age difference between Zap and Reona?

  • thejh

    “everyone” seems a bit off…

  • mirrim

Yeah…at first I was like, why is he smiling as he says “everyone died”? But then it makes sense when you think about how happy he must be every time he gets to be around Reona. : )

  • Psiberkiwi

Thinking am I that two different artworks they are.

  • Psiberkiwi

Yeah – especially as there were survivors…

But then again, people seem to say “everyone” when they really mean “the bulk of the population”.

  • That was nice of the GEF to leave the planet still habitable.Sure they attempted the genoside of an entire culture, but look at all the still useable oxygen in the atmosphere!

  • Everyone*

*except three children preserved as genetic specimens.

  • Nomen

I like how the bottom left panel echoes this(http://www.zapcomic.com/2013/12/667b-or-die-trying/) to a degree.

  • Marduk

    GEnocide Force

It’s sad to see how Zap can accept all that. I’ll never look at his earlier goofiness the same again

  • Reona thought she said something uncouth by saying that it seems deserted. Zap is assuring her that she didn’t hurt his feelings because he has some distance and the wound isn’t open anymore.

His feelings over what happened are really complicated, though, as you’ll soon see.

  • Thanks for thanking!!

  • A+ interpretations by both of you. Top of the class.

  • I draw a lot of callback stuff, specifically the hands-clasping type panels, and the upside-down introductions. I hope on a reread people start to notice the visual language a bit more. I did try to add some cohesive elements throughout!

  • me

    Screwholes?

  • me

    Somewhere around 10000 years.

  • me

Could have used neutron weapons or some sort of short half-life radiation bombs to get rid of the people but keep the rest up.

  • jeeze, what? I don’t even think the GEF has been around for that long.

  • safyrejet

    Still setting the curve. ;P

  • safyrejet

Screw holes, places where screws had been. Take what you will out of it, I meant nothing innuendo-y if that’s what you’re “?”ing.

  • safyrejet

Aw, but there will always be a special place in my heart for happy dopey Zap in floppy sleeves.

I too am curious as to exactly how long is “long time ago.” Can’t wait for next Monday. See Pascalle, you have people looking forward to Monday!

  • Kindra Coates

Oh always, floppy sleeves for the win. Maybe I shouldn’t admit how long I looked at the cover for this chapter saying “but they fit? What?”

  • hahahahahahaaha.

  • Yeah, the clothes were always symbolic! He didn’t hit his role as captain before.

  • svartalf

So…we now know part of where the three came from.

  • Kindra Coates

Okay, now I’m looking forward to the other character’s reactions to competent Zap. Especially the ones who only knew the floppy sleeve version. :)

  • The longest flashback in all of webcomics is coming up. It’ll all be out on the table.

  • BeepDog

So the “butts” comic. That’s how all my comics would go. All of them. All the time.

  • safyrejet

Me too! But I think what I love the most is that Reona started falling in love with him even as a dopey odd ball sorta guy. I think she also saw through some of that and realized there was something more, given how she interacted with him in the mindscape sequence.

  • Mike

That would make considerably more sense. And the longer I look at this, the more convinced I am that my initial observation was incorrect.

  • yeah, they’re two different things. I should have colored them more distinctly.

  • Butts.

    ;-)

  • Speedy Marsh

Yeah, the crown device really messed with his head. Now he has a few screws loose. ;)

  • Speedy Marsh

The statues all have really long hair. Maybe my theory about psychics getting their power from their hair isn’t as silly as I thought. If the people of Zap’s world hadn’t shaved their heads like their favorite musicians, the GEF wouldn’t have stood a chance against them. Maybe Zap cutting Gunner’s hair wasn’t just a symbolic gesture. Maybe Efrem was weak, ’cause he only had thick eyebrows. Maybe Zap was stronger, ’cause of his pointy hair. Maybe Gunner was strongest, ’cause he had long, flowing hair. Maybe the statues were a warning from the ancient psychics.
Maybe it’s just a “hairbrained” idea, and Pascalle just really likes long hair.

  • maybe the long hair is culturally significant and Gunner’s long hair indicated his inability to assimilate as well as Zap and Efrem!

    :O

  • stealth

    Best. Answer. Ever.

  • Characterization. We has it.

  • Psiberkiwi

Perhaps, perhaps not. After all, if the stone that both were crafted from was taken from the same quarry, then surely both would be of a similar colour.

  • sunphoenix

I like how whenever Zap looks at Renoa.. you can ‘see’ the addoration in his eyes and expression. so very sweet! :)

  • He loves her so much!

  • Speedy Marsh

Maybe it’s culturally significant, AND you really like long hair.

Maybe I have nothing better to do with my time than come up with crazy theories while I’m waiting for the Monday update.

Of course, you didn’t actually flat out deny the power of hair, so that could be Why long hair is culturally significant. Therefore, I’ll stick with my crazy theory, till I’m proven crazy.

  • Speedy Marsh

Besides, if you lock me in a room with a thousand monkeys and a typewriter for an infinite amount of time, I’m bound to come up with an infinite number of ideas that are just as bananas.

  • chrisbrady

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean, know what I mean?

  • chrisbrady

So why didn’t they occupy the place, then? Whenever you go to war, it’s because they have something you want, and you want it so bad that they all must die. So what was the point of this?
