Well, you’re half right: the expression “jumping the shark” does come from Happy Days, but Fonz jumped over a shark with water skis, not with his motorcycle.

Oh yeah! I remember that episode, now. I think when I made that comment, I was thinking about a different episode, where The Fonz crashed his motorcycle while doing a jump. (And, probably conflating it with Evil Knievel’s shark tank jump)

If I recall correctly (this time), the shark jumping episode came about in response to Henry Winkler’s desire to exhibit his water skiing skills. No way am I gonna set one toe across the event horizon of TVTropes to confirm that.
