Is Efrem having doubts on how Gunner’s going about with his plans? Hmmm is a conscience growing?

Yeah, come on people…
(but, I saw his pic on her blog already, so I cheated a bit)

I think Efrem already has a conscience; I’m hoping he’s really a double agent, making Gunner think he’s on his side but really working for the Resistance.
New reader here, and I gotta say that I enjoy the drama.

That’s strange, I recognized Efrem almost immediately. It took me a moment, but the blue eyes I think are a dead giveaway. My first thought was Will for some reason, even though he has black hair, but he’s out of commission. Going down the short list of people who hang around with Gunner, Efrem popped up easily in my head.
I think what kind of threw me off is that Efrem, at least initially, seemed pretty indifferent to the plights of others. He appeared to have no qualms with betraying his crew and hurting Reona. However, he’s clearly not evil to the bone. His motives seem a little ambiguous. I think he doesn’t like Gunner (remember they clashed a little several issues ago), and he didn’t kill Reona when he had the chance.
However I don’t think Efrem is a double agent, or even at good guy. I think he does kind of feel sorry for the Satellites, but I doubt he’ll do anything about it except be a little angrier at Gunner. He has a conscience, for sure, but his true motives are shrouded. My guess is that he has his own ends, and he’s just using/following Gunner for the moment because it’s the most convenient.
Might be one of those “ends justifies the means” guys. I’m hoping he’s not a double agent, because that would mean Reona would still love him (after this was all over). And if she went over Zap’s head to be with him again, I’d jump into that comic and slap her good.
Then I’d get rid of Naveed and take Gunner for myself. :3
Man I really don’t want Reona going back to Efrem again.. I don’t think he was very good for her in the first place. I think he just uses people for his own gain. The one thing I find odd is that the comic is called zap and is about zap but hasn’t had zap in it for what seems like forever… Yes, I know build up.. You need to build up everyone elses so that we the reader know why everything is happening and what peoples movtives are… and maybe I am missing something or have completely forgot but I can’t remember what happened to zap in the first place… I think I need to reread the comic.

He became the captain of the Excelsior and everyone started liking him. He was turning out to be a pretty rad guy, and then Gunner kidnapped him in front of everyone, after kicking their butts.
The problem with webcomics is that they move slowly, and it takes years for some plots to come to fruition. Drawing the art is hard work, and it’s exhausting. And now that Pascalle’s art has turned from great to phenomenal over the years (it’s AMAZING how much her style has evolved!) I think the story is getting more thorough and involved.
I think it wasn’t really intentional for Zap to be out of the comic for so long, though I’ve really appreciated this focus on Gunner. I hope Zap comes back soon! Or maybe he busts out of the place. I want more background story on him! I want to know where he came from! *flails*
You can tell it’s the future by all the chrome buildings and shiny clothing.
You’ll know it’s even further in the future when even the people are chrome.

Mind you, I’m not very good at guessing motives, but I get the sense that Efrem has been trying to protect Reona all along. First he distanced himself physically from Excelsior and its crew (which serves to draw Gunner’s attention away from them), and then when he unexpectedly ran into Reona again, he really did seem to be (1) buying time for Zap to come save Reona from Naveed and (2) trying to make Reona hate him so that she can move on and do what she has to do when the time comes…
I somehow doubt that Efrem is using Gunner, given their respective power levels. Efrem almost certainly realizes that there’s no way he could take Gunner on. That leaves either the pragmatic “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” or the double-agent “make sure Zap is in a position to take Gunner down when the timing is right.” Come to think of it, didn’t Efrem try to secure some alone time with Zap after he got crowned?
Thus, when I saw him in this strip, I recognized the face immediately.
I honestly don’t know why some people are startled or having a problem with it.
I’d say that if anything, the facial expression he’s demonstrating here, somewhat along with the bone structure, is more akin to one of Zap’s if anything.
But still nothing so crude as to make me mistake him for Zap or anyone else for that matter.
Shrug. Different strokes, I guess.
I’d write it down for people here having far better imagination than I do.
And I thought I’m a creative type, huh? Gives one perspective.

Brad Wardell on a Cross!
It’s been over five years already? I remember that strip like yesterday!
That’s one hell of a perspective to put on things…

It took me a little bit of brain power to realise that was Efrem but probably my bad memory more than the slight changes. lol
As for why he’s all depressed at the end there? I think he and Miss
Satellite have been doing some desk rearranging of their own ‘off screen’ and she at least partially regrets not being able to keep that going. But I think it’s long overdue for them to leave this rather abusive employment.
Just because it needs to be said; your art is as great as always Pascalle! The shiny chrome just makes it even better. :D
No, the dates are all wrong on some of the older strips because I had to import them all in one batch when we moved sites.
That was from 2009.

to clarify,…you believe that at some point europa had orbited efrem’s asteroid cluster while docking with his *cough* orbital elevator.
interesting theory. someone check the security records for confirmation….
on second though, cancel that order. some things are better left to the imagination.
but then again this could assist in proving string theory as it correlates to two celestial bodies interaction with one another in a highly excited state of movement….
no,…no we had better not. somehow it may lead to disproving reality as we know it and we would all wink out of existence, then i would have to spend all of eternity floating around in a blank void arguing with myself,…..no, tis better to leave some things to the imagination.
but if there was some orbiting done between europa and efrem, we can only hope that they were capable of navigating around the black holes.
*wink*

To be fair, that was either 3 or 5 years ago (that URL is confusing), and the tint of the hair is different.
I figured Efrem was the only one it could be though.
Welcome, new Zapling and fellow Dreamer! I’d recognize that 2¢ coin anywhere …

To be quite honest, I remember seeing him in a few panels early on when they ran into him and from that exchange, the look in his eyes at that time seemed to convey a more ” I don’t want to do this but I have no choice” kind of attitude. Like maybe there is something/someone he is trying to protect by doing this. Idk that’s just my take. my memory could be bad.

We will be disappointed? Man Pascalle, your pep talks need work.
If I just said “He’ll be back” everyone would get really excited.

i feel really sorry for the elementals…they are the last of their race, they’re ability to reproduce is markedly reduced now that one of them is dead, and i feel like gunner and naveed are not going to simply let them waltz away. in short they really seem to be getting a shitty deal.
Andrew
you know who I miss? Zap. Freaken BADASS!
Don Quixote
Efrem is a saaaaad puppy.

I think Efrem is a deep cover double agent, and it’s killing him that he has to keep letting down the people he cares about to maintain his cover. He also has to be a pretty powerful psychic to be able to blast Reona through a wall and stained glass window and down a hill at the casino without killing or seriously injuring her. All that without giving himself away to Naveed.
In fact, to me, it seemed like an elaborate display for Naveed. If he really wanted to kill Reona, he could have snapped her neck or simply stopped the blood from flowing to her brain. (Of course, I must admit, the psychics do seem to have a flair for the dramatic)

Anyone else craving softserve ice cream after panel 2? :)
John Smith
More like cotton candy…but to each his own.

I came here from Wilde Life, and for an absurd second I thought Efram was Clifford in the 4th panel. I guess it’s the lighting making his hair look red. And also my lack of sleep XD
