Here is something for you all!

Happy Halloween & thanks for reading! Click to embiggen.

    Rape Time.

  • Garfalk

or not. probably just going to berate her in that way that he does.
and then completely change course again to make her still absolutely need him.
like an abusive spouse. only psychic.

  • Rowan

I love seeing the power Gunner has over her. She’s usually the bamf-est lady this side of the galaxy, but five minutes after she comes raging into Gunner’s room, he has her afraid and at his mercy without so much as saying a cross word to her.

    He is so. Awesome.

Unrelated: I lol every time you say ’embiggen.’

  • Neiona

    Oh Gunner, you sexy meaniehead.

  • Sagansjagger

    He is such an ass.

  • Smerc

now…..look into my eyes!…..you are getting frisky naveed….veeery frisky.

  • Astralfury

Gunner’s one-man Good Cop, Bad Cop routine never fails to amuse!

  • Noir

Yeah, goodbye only strong female character.

  • Chatterbaby

Ahh dang someone already took my observation of the power he has over her. Anyway. Yeah it IS fascinating how that works.

And.. I foresee him tossing her out a window.

  • Zepher

“and now, naveed, i’m gonna check your teefs! have you been flossing young lady?”

  • I love how Naveed is very powerful and confident, except for this one thing. Gunner is her one weakness and she’s addicted to him.

I don’t think finding out a character has a flaw should make them less of a strong character. Naveed started as the ‘femme fatale’ trope and now you’re seeing her grow beyond that.

And I would actually argue that Naveed was never intended to be taken as a ‘strong female character’ since she walks around mostly naked all the time, generally only takes orders and doesn’t think for herself.

Our goal with Naveed was to have a sexy vamp that we developed into more of a person. Most of the time these characters romp around through an entire plot, are dispatched of in the end with the only thing they really contributed to the story was ‘being sexy.’

  • God, he is a one-man Good Cop/Bad Cop. I never thought of it that way!

  • Good observations on Naveed/Gunner (for the shippers: ‘Gunveed’)

Also, embiggen is a perfectly cromulent word.
“A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.”

    panel 3 = Too cute!

Hmm the ‘last page’ button seems to only turn the page for me. My browser mebe?

  • Ugh, you’re right about the button. For some reason it points to the “drama mama” page and then advances one comic each time after that. So, I’ll have to figure that out.

  • Zepher

it did that last week too, i think.

  • I had to dump the page cache. So, the site will run a little slower for a bit, but the pages are straightened out.

Thanks for the heads up guys! I don’t check that stuff regularly because it is dynamic.

  • Psionicost

Gunner:NOW… Time to pay the price for your failure!

    Naveed: AAAAAIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!!

  • Ramification

Most abusive relationships are like that. It’s a troupe of its own, actually.

  • Anonymous

my guess is he’s about to call her down on not only failing to get the ship, but having it blown up…

  • Ramification

Not failure, rather, for thinking herself above the reach of her belly button as to storm his office, throw a tantrum and toss his toys all over the floor.
It’s time for the “You’ve forgotten your place” evil-camp trope to come to play.

  • Angela Griffin

NOW…. Gunner has words with Naveed, and then they start snogging…
    MEANWHILE………………………………. where’s Zap, Efrem, and William? T.T

  • Sona

What about Zap… Where did he go, I thought this comic was about him??

  • Rowan

A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.

I’ve only recently undertaken and read the entire comic. Seeing Gunner’s character evolve as he’s been written has been completely fascinating. I certainly love what he’s become.

  • Smerc

    gunner- “now……..time for a bath”

*naveed screams and thrashes about as gunner uses his powers to float her to the bathroom*

    what?…she is a cat….woman type person meow.

  • You really foresee defenestration here?  It just doesn’t seem to fit, to me …

    ;)

  • Noir

I hadn’t considered Naveed to be a particularly strong character, and everyone must have flaws; however, she was the strongest female around.  And now she has joined the ranks of chicks whose emotions go haywire over a guy.  I think that category includes every female character now?

I’m entirely okay with works which fail the Bechdel Test, but this is currently failing with flying colors.

  • The Bechdel Test:

    1) it includes at least two women who have names – PASS. Zap has lots of important female characters. The last fight scene featured a predominantly girl-fight that wasn’t played for sex or camp. 2 ) The women have at least one conversation about something other than a man or men. PASS Since the female characters actually talk to each other. Reona and Kasey have talked about her robot arm. Naveed and Holly talked about the location of the Daedelus. Reona and Holly had lots of conversations during the last arc. Excelsior and Kasey have talked about Excelsior itself.

Zap! easily passes the Bechdel test. That’s not to say that I don’t think that it is by any means perfect. We’re constantly trying to make the characters more well-rounded an interesting. As a woman, having interesting, developed women in the comic is really important to me.

Consider, as well, that even though characters like Reona center around her relationships with men, she isn’t passive. Efrem went missing and she didn’t sit around and pine and wait to be rescued, she went out there and tried to find him, same with her and Zap. Reona isn’t physically strong (or even particularly emotionally strong. Her heart is on her sleeve) but she’s determined. Contrast her with Naveed, who is physically strong but as you’re seeing here, very emotionally dependent. Reona and Naveed are foils to one another, so as you see Reona gain strength, you’ll see cracks in Naveed’s armor.

I’m sorry you’re disappointed with the way Naveed is developing. Her broken relationship with Gunner has been something that we’ve been slowly revealing throughout the course of the comic. Hopefully you’re just frustrated with Naveed because you want her to do better for herself, and not disappointed in the story.

  • Chatterbaby

I can certainly see him healing her just to kill her. THAT I can see. SPECIFICALLY tossing her out a window, probably not.

“Now… I am going to ask you something, and if I don’t like your answer I’ll rip your jaw out from your skull.”

“What… do you want to know?”

“… Do you… know the muffin man?”

  • Smerc

“NOW……..I want to know, the last time you were here, what happened to MY CURTAINS?!”

this is going to be an interesting week.

  • Ramification

“Yeah, in your dreams!” comes to mind. ;P
    Poor, poor, kitty.

  • I personally think Naveed is developing well. Tough girl who’s deadly with a sword and cold to her opponents, yet has a weakness for Gunner in an abusive relationship kind of way. Strengths, weaknesses, varied emotions… Very 3-dimensional to me. :D

  • ha ha ha, who?

    *dies*

  •  That is an odd combination of characters…

(who all happen to have the next scene together)

Actually, I’m pretty skeptical that you don’t have inside information about the plot.

  • Astralfury

Naveed has had the vet work on her, clearly it’s time for her shots. She should consider herself lucky that she is female right now – we all know what would happen to a male kitty at the vet (hint: it beats paper but loses to rock).

  • Smerc

“NOW…….we are going to discuss why my indoor zen garden is NOT your litter box !!!”

  • mrz80

I wonder how much of Naveed’s scrambled brain syndrome where Gunnar is concerned is really the result of her own emotional instability, and how much is Gunnar sticking a psychic hand mixer into her brain and deliberately turning her mental state into a light frothy whip?

  • Jaye

    Love. This. So. Much.

Actually, do we even need Zap anymore? Heck, dump all the “good guys”, I just wanna see what Gunner does!

  • Having flaws and caring about others doesn’t reduce a characters strength. They are people (fictional ones) and everyone has their issues. I think all the females OTHER THAN naveed are strong… unless you think the recent DC character reboot you consider to be strong females… which I I dont

  • That’s funny because I’ve written alot of gunner based on situations I’ve been in when I’ve had to play good cop bad cop.

  • I’ve been giving Angela plot info in exchange for pepperollis…

  • No. The title has an exclamation point after it. This comic is about onomatopoeia. Any resemblance to character names is purely coincidental

  • Damien Horton

Wow. The better part of 600 comics in 4 hours.

You need to put a warning on this stuff – it’s addictive.

  • Damien Horton

And in a startling twist, her face pops off and it turns out it was Robot the whole time!

Why not Nunner, it sounds hilarious.

  •  You’re right. That’s hilarious.

  • Matthias

“Now, we are going to discuss the many reasons that we DON’T. LEAVE. HAIRBALLS. ON. THE. COFEE TABLE!!!!!”
