Wow, Wow. Website Down!

March 19, 2010 | 9:03 am, by Pascalle Lepas

We had a pretty nasty website outage yesterday. Giving the host the benefit of the doubt. Things DO happen, afterall. I upgraded our site24x7 account to ping the server every 30 minutes and test for outages. Hopefully everything runs smoothly from now on. If it doesn’t we’ll up and hop on over to a new host.

Anyway, sorry if the outage messed up your comic reading plans yesterday.

UPDATE: We’re continuing to have downtime. I guess I need to start looking for a new host. *grumbles* If you know of a good host, let me know in the comments!

Whatever you do don't go to Dreamhost. They're trash. They were my first forray into paid hosting and within a month I was bashing my head against a wall in frustration. Took another year to switch.

I'm with Justhost (http://www.justhost.com/) right now. Their Cpanel is a tad confusing, but so far I haven't had any outages/real issues (been there since November).

From all my research into these things Justhost came out as most recommended and reliable. Followed by hostgator. Then bluehost (which is run by dreamhost as well…which confuddled me).

Good luck, and I love the new site.

I've been with IPower for 10 years now. There will always be some outages, but they are pretty quick with getting things back up. I get maybe 12 hours of outages a year.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I'll be sure to look into them. Our current host said they were having trouble with our particular server and that it's fixed now, so… WE'LL SEE…

Take a look at Squarespace, they have great redundancy. http://www.squarespace.com/ also, we've been using 1&1 for over a decade. http://1and1.com/

One request? Please change the comic image names back to the old format? Or at least to the sequence number (aka comic page number)?

  • Thanks for the hosting suggestions!

The archive pages were generated with a dynamic import of the comic page files. There's no way for me to batch alter their names since they're based off the names of the files, which are named for the date they go online (20040122 for example). Eventually I'll get them all manually renamed but right now it's more important to keep the current site working and drawing comics.

    Thanks for reading!
